How does art change when a new medium emerges?
And what happens when artists probe at the limits of that medium?
This exhibition invites you on a journey through 10 spaces – each one exploring how generations of artists have continuously expanded the boundaries of audiovisual storytelling across different technologies and artistic forms.
Created in collaboration with LI-MA – living media art, the exhibition looks back at the formative years of MonteVideo, the first gallery dedicated to video art in the Netherlands. Through works from the LI-MA archive, you will discover how artists have experimented with emerging technologies from the 1970s onwards, shaping the visual language of a new medium. Whether developing electronic images to challenge the conventions of painting, or embracing the creative freedom of portable video cameras, these works reflect new ways of making and experiencing art.
Throughout the exhibition, pioneering creations by Livinus and Jeep van de Bundt, Nam June Paik, Nan Hoover, SERVAAS, Tom Klinkowstein, and Trevor Batten are displayed alongside present-day innovators: 4DSOUND, Balfua, Boris Acket, Children of the Light, and Lumus Instruments. Together, their works demonstrate how artistic practice continuously responds to shifting cultural, social, and technological realities.
The exhibition is kindly supported by Cultuurloket DigitALL.
