ALL-TOGETHER-NOW

In 2019, Katie Bouman’s scientific breakthrough allowed us to visualise the unseeable: the first-ever image of a black hole processed by a new algorithm.

Children of the Light found inspiration in this now-viral image. Each of the five floating rings in the space moves through its cycle before they align for a slight moment of synchronicity. Like dimensions between black holes and an ever-expanding sun, the movement of the rings seems to dissolve spatial boundaries. The tone and temperature of the light in the work shift over time from amber to pure white light, creating an illusion of seeing the spectrum of colours.

Gathering around these large suspended rings, orbiting becomes almost ceremonial, providing viewers with a unique, physical, and spatial experience as they navigate and interact with the artwork.

Children of the Light, an Amsterdam-based artist duo comprising Christopher Gabriel (b. 1980, Oslo) and Arnout Hulskamp (b. 1978 Amsterdam), are recognisable for using light as their primary medium. Inspired by the cosmos and its encompassing natural phenomena, they create immersive performances, videos, sculptures, and installations that evoke dreamlike scenes in spaces ranging from clubs to churches that encompass collectivity, transcendence, and introspection.

Their practice has a rich history of collaboration. They have worked with renowned musicians like Phillip Glass and the Darkside Band (Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington) and have shown their work at various venues, such as De School, Stedelijk Museum, Oude Kerk, and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
