Developed in close collaboration with LI-MA, our new exhibition room is dedicated to the history of media art.
Together with LI-MA, we explore the legacy of the early days of Montevideo, a pioneering institute for video art founded by René Coelho in Amsterdam in 1978. Drawing from the Montevideo archive, we highlight the work of Jeep and Livinus van de Bundt, father and son and seminal figures in the development of experimental media art practices involving animation, light and sound. The presentation of their work is accompanied by archival footage and artworks by Nam June Paik, Tom Klinkowstein, Trevor Batten and Nan Hoover, all pioneers of video art and affiliated with Montevideo.
This presentation marks the second chapter of Nxt Foundation’s evolving artistic programme, which engages with the expanded field of new media art. The programme approaches media as a gateway to new worlds across its historical contexts, contemporary practices, and future trajectories.
LI-MA (Living Media Art) is an Amsterdam-based institute dedicated to the distribution, preservation, and research of media art. Established in 2013, it has maintained a longstanding role as a vital conduit between artists and cultural and scientific institutions. Drawing on its extensive archive of media art connected to the Netherlands, spanning the past six decades, LI-MA has, for this occasion, collaborated with Archival Consciousness to digitise a curated selection of Livinus van de Bundt’s pioneering works in experimental video art.
This programme is kindly supported by Cultuurloket DigitALL.
