Meet Slollas, shapeshifting creatures of pure expression. They can take endless forms and communicate through dazzling sounds generated by their movement. Slollas are playful and gentle, beautiful and frightening. They live in Sayssiworld, a continuously evolving digital realm created by Balfua.
The artist builds the world of his unique characters through a combination of conventional and digital processing tools. The characters, created with CGI and AI, have evolved over the years with the introduction of AI tools. Their chameleonic nature surprises the creator and visitors to Sayssiword. They are presented in the work on a digital “cinema screen” called the Slollaleia. The enigmatic environment integrates sound effects and music the artist records with acoustic and electronic instruments.
Balfua | b. 1994 Los Angeles
Under the moniker Balfua, Berlin-based artist and musician Sam Balfus crafts immersive digital artworks rooted in world-building, fantasy, and the liminality of describable experience. Music and visuals converge in intricate, multisensory environments where he integrates various analogue and digital techniques—drawing, sculpture, Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), animation, VR, 3D printing, and AI.
Among these environments is Sayssiworld, an evolving digital ecosystem with dazzling creatures that has gained popularity in social media and amassed Balfua a large follower base amongst his other work. His latest production, notably, involved collaborating with Björk for an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
